Help us create the program for Ropecon 2016

The call for program submissions for year 2016 has ended. Thank you! You can contact the head of program via email at ohjelma@ropecon.fi.

By volunteering as a program organizer you will receive either a one-day ticket or a weekend ticket to the event depending on the length of your program. As a rule of thumb, the main organizer of the program (e.g. speaker on a lecture, or head judge of a tournament) receives a free weekend ticket and the program helpers receive a one-day ticket.

For comparison, the volunteer staff members working at cloakrooms, ticket sales booths etc. receive a weekend ticket for 8 hours and a one-day ticket for 4 hours of volunteering respectively. Other perks of volunteering include access to the staff green room during the event.

The theme for this year’s event is called “Chaos and Order” – two opposing forces that are locked in an eternal battle against each other. One cannot exist without the other and together they create balance in the universe. Without order there is no life, but without chaos nothing will progress. You are welcome to use the theme as an inspiration when planning your program or game for the event.

If you have an idea for a program that you would like to organize, please don’t hesitate to contact us! You can find the contact information for each of our program categories below.

Lectures, panel discussions and workshops

We are looking for interesting and immersive talks, workshops and other similar programs for Ropecon 2016. Content inspired by this year’s theme, “Chaos and Order”, is particularly appreciated. We are also looking to expand our array of English language programs in a variety of topics, especially on the topic of strategy and board games, collectible card games and miniature wargames.

Examples of programs in this category include presentations, lectures, panel discussions and workshops. Programs can be either beginner friendly, or intended for a more experienced audience. The duration is typically either 45 minutes or 105 minutes. If you want to arrange a workshop – either a discussion based or a crafts themed one – we would like you to arrange it twice during the convention if possible.

The new facilities at the Messukeskus, Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre are well-equipped: projectors, microphones and other necessary audiovisual gear are available at all program locations. You can take a look at the new venue online here.

According to our current plans, presentations and panel discussions etc. will be held in halls 201, 207 and in 204 and 205 combined into one. The workshops will be held in halls 210, 215, and 216. Other halls, including the larger ones, may also be available for some program items on request.

Please send your program submission by April 15th, 2016.

If you have any questions about organizing lectures, panel discussions or workshops, please contact us via email at puheohjelma@ropecon.fi.

Tabletop role-playing games

Ropecon is seeking tabletop role-playing Game Masters! Ropecon is a great chance to test your own adventures with new players and receive valuable feedback. You can rerun great scenarios with new players, inspiring them and providing them with new ideas in the process. You can introduce new game systems and game worlds, gaining new insight yourself. Or, you can just enjoy running games for the fun of it!

The theme for Ropecon 2016 is called “Chaos and Order”. Are the characters led by the temptation of quick and easy solutions, or by the strict order and consideration in the face of challenges? How is the struggle of these opposing forces portrayed in the game; is one mightier than the other? What happens when these roles begin to blur and blend together and the ultimate order starts to gain chaotic features? We encourage you to be inspired by this year’s theme and to utilize it in your game, but it is not compulsory.

The Game Masters will receive a free weekend ticket by running eight hours of games during the event, or a one-day ticket by running four hours of games respectively. Game Masters will also be rewarded with loot: free role-playing stuff will be given out on Sunday. The more games you run, the higher you climb in the loot ladder!

Please sign up as a Game Master by June 30th, 2016.

If you have any questions about signing up as a Game Master, please contact us via email at roolipelit@ropecon.fi.

Live-action role-playing games

We are looking for people interested in organizing larps in Ropecon 2016! Now is your chance to entertain and spread fun amongst the visitors in the form a convention larp. Both bigger and smaller productions are welcome. We can only accommodate a limited amount of games, so gather your ideas and props and write down your submission as soon as possible. In exchange for organizing a larp you shall be rewarded with eternal glory and a weekend ticket to the event. Extra credits for those who organize a larp inspired by this year’s theme, “Chaos and Order”!

Interested in organizing a freeform game? Freeform games are similar to traditional larps where players move and act in-character, but they are played with only 3-8 players with minimal or no props, and the entire game is played out in one room. Freeform games are strongly narrative in nature and can include pre-scripted scenes.   When filling out the submission form, please remember to mention in the “Other Information for the Role-Playing Help Desk “-section that you would like to hold your game in the room 214, so we know that your larp will be a freeform game.

Please send your program submission by April 15th, 2016.
